**[aileen365-blog](https://aileen365-blog.tumblr.com/?ref=drewshannon.net):** Hi Aileen, you don't know me (I think I started following you via my old coworker Katie Brown?), and please forgive me for asking a personal question like this, but I was just curious what your transition from NYC -> SoCal was like. I've worked in music in NYC for 3+ years, and am looking to slow things down a bit by moving to LA this summer. Is there anything that you wish you had known before you moved, or things I should be aware of? Just trying to find people who have done this. Thanks! 

Hi Drew! I knew that I “knew” you from somewhere, I forgot it was through Katie Brown :)

So I’ve lived in Carlsbad (30 min north of downtown San Diego) for 4 years now, and the whole culture of living in San Diego county is completely different than Los Angeles - so that’s the first thing to keep in mind. I specifically didn’t move to LA because I hate it there haha. It’s so easy for people to be flakey in LA, and being in LA makes ME flakey. Just something about the city, it’s size, and the traffic I guess. I think it also has a lot to do with where you live in LA, and finding your niche in the city. I never felt like New York was like that because public transportation makes it so easy to get anywhere you need to go. LA’s public transportation is pretty limited, so having a car is a necessity. If you can find the neighborhoods you like, live in those areas, and find a solid group of people who live in the same area and like the same neighborhoods, then I think you can be pretty happy living in LA.

The part about living in southern California that can’t be beat is all the sunshine, having perfect weather a majority of the time, being able to do outdoorsy things like hiking, and I love being able to see the ocean whenever I drive west. Just make sure you have a car or you can’t really enjoy living here.
